Upon My Daddy's Shoulders
Upon My Daddy's Shoulders

My Daddy was my mountain
With a strength that could endure… almost anything
I remember listening to him strum his old guitar
To the songs… he loved to sing
It doesn’t seem that long ago…
As we sat there on the boat together
Drifting with the gentle winds…
On that day we talked and laughed
As time was very kind to us… it chose to slowly pass
I remember those long ago times
When my little legs would tire
Where he would lift me up,
upon his strong and gentle shoulders
In my childhood joy… I seemed to rise much higher
“Daddy let me touch the moon!”
“Let me touch the stars… oh please!”
For when I was upon my Daddy’s shoulders
There was no other place… I’d wish to be
Then came the morning…
I found out... my Mama had died
He took me in his comforting arms
And there... upon my Daddy’s shoulders
I laid my head and cried
He worked his fingers to the bone
To provide his children with a home
Upon his shoulders... I know there must have been times
He felt he carried the weight of the world
Yet, the worries and the stress…
In my childhood joy… I seemed to rise much higher
“Daddy let me touch the moon!”
“Let me touch the stars… oh please!”
For when I was upon my Daddy’s shoulders
There was no other place… I’d wish to be
Then came the morning…
I found out... my Mama had died
He took me in his comforting arms
And there... upon my Daddy’s shoulders
I laid my head and cried
He worked his fingers to the bone
To provide his children with a home
Upon his shoulders... I know there must have been times
He felt he carried the weight of the world
Yet, the worries and the stress…
to us were never shown
Now he soars among the heavenly stars
In those that now... sparkle in my eyes
Where long ago little fingers…
Once tried to desperately touch
Even at my age I’ll have to admit...
There are times... I still try
I'll hold those moments… forever
In my heart… so sweet and fair
In things I was so blessed to find
Like shining stars and gentle shoulders…
